An Intro to
"The Possibilities Grow Between" Series
I’ll be sharing a series of perspectives that highlight what I’m calling “The Possibilities Grow Between”. There are some ideas in food and agriculture, held by many (and myself included at times) as fundamental truths, that from my perspective don’t hold up to deeper examination. I’m calling this conversation “The Possibilities Grow Between”, meaning that, in the place where the difference of perspectives becomes visible, there is a space for something new to be created. In that gap between the various conceptual versions of how agriculture works and what is real both now and in the trajectory of where things are headed, there is a space for new possibilities to emerge and grow that may not have existed previously.

Some of the aspects of agriculture where I'll dig deeper are:
-
Land,
-
Food,
-
Stewardship,
-
Connection and Collaboration, and
-
Future Agricultural Possibilities.

This is an invitation to step back, and to look at both the big picture and the detail of how that applies to farming and food. I'll be the first to recognize there is an overwhelming amount of information available on agriculture to digest. And part of what I’ll do in these shares is pointing to the distilled patterns and trends I’ve observed through digesting a wealth of information and experience.
My hypotheses will draw on data and wisdom from across a wide range of spheres. Some of them won’t fit the status quo. That is admittedly uncomfortable for me in some ways. Yet it feels like it’s time for some of these ideas to be shared, so they can spark insights or actions for those who are open to them, and so they can be applied, fine-tuned, and further applied.

For those who may not know me well, I’m coming at this conversation as someone who loves and is an active part of the family farm I grew up on in North Carolina, who has invested tremendous energy and effort into understanding conventional and traditional and innovative ways of thinking about food and agricultural systems both in the U.S. and around the world, and who fundamentally wants to see farmers and ranchers– those who are the stewards of land– to be able to wisely and skillfully navigate transitions that, to me, will be necessary to farm and ranch in the future.

I'm looking forward to digging in further here in coming days. Topics will be listed below as they're shared.
